Like any other state, many of the people of Newfoundland are into the habit of drinking. Not all of them consume alcohol in a heavy amount although it is not necessary that heavy drinkers are the only alcoholics. In Newfoundland, people start drinking at a very young age and mostly they start of at the social events and parties. Often students start drinking at schools and their peers encourage them to do so. Gradually they get addicted to alcohol which causes severe health hazards to them. Many of the 19 year old males have reported erectile dysfunction as a result of alcoholism. The adults suffer from loss of memory, weakness and obesity which paves the way towards morbidity.
Those who are below the legal drinking age try to buy alcohol secretly or request others to do so. Selling alcohol to under aged buyers is absolutely illegal in Newfoundland and this is the reason why government staffs try to prevent it at the root. The illegal alcohol sellers are identified carefully so that alcoholism is reduced significantly. There were more than 1050 incidents wherein minors were refused by the alcohol shop owners. There are media advertisements and posters which discourage selling of alcohol to the young people. Awareness programs are organized so that students and teenagers get informed about the fatal effects of alcoholism. To stop alcoholic driving, ‘Drinking and Driving Awareness Program’ and ‘Wise-up Program’ are organized. Students of grade 5 and 4 are also allowed to participate in these programs.
Social drinking is common in every state and Newfoundland is no exception. But consciousness of people and government is essential to put a stop on alcoholism and it’s after effects.
