Alcoholism is one of the major problems that are affecting people of all age groups in Alberta. The pattern of drinking in Canada shows that almost 75% of the total populace consumes alcohol. Spirits, beers and wines are preferred by the people and in Alberta alcoholism has increased noticeably during the past few years. A recent survey revealed the fact that almost 93.6% of people have tasted alcohol at least once in their lifetime. The more important fact is that about 79.5% of them drank alcohol in the last year. Among the university students in Alberta, 37% drinks till they get hangover. Substantial amount of damage is caused to the university properties inside the campus by alcoholics. This also causes major impact on the expenditure of both the university authority and the students.

Generally it has been observed that teenagers start consuming alcohol at their early seventeen at various social occasions and parties. Almost 23% of the population is addicted to alcohol who consume every week wherein 39.4% of them drink once a week. Although it seems trivial apparently, it can lead to severity over a period of time. Round about 20% Albertans drink heavily and 29.5% drink frequently although not heavily. But the actual fact is that an alcoholic need not be a heavy drunker. Gradually they lose control over drinking limits and end up with severe addiction and health problems related to it. There are several manifestations that alcoholics suffer from.

In Alberta 13.3% people reported about repenting due to their drinking habit. Many of them also suffer from memory failure which is an assured after effect of alcoholism. Obesity can be another important side effect of alcoholism that can lead to morbidity. Hence proper treatment to prevent and cure alcoholism is necessary to reduce alcoholism among Albertans.
